Butterfly Ball – Maria Merian the Mother of Metamorphosis

I Maria Merian, embarked on a fascinating journey of exploration and discovery in the 17th century. Passionate about nature, I dedicated my life to studying insects and their metamorphoses.
My groundbreaking work, “Metamorphosis Insectorum Surinamensium,” allowed me to share my discoveries with the world.
Johanna and Dorothea, my two talented daughters, accompanied me on this scientific adventure. Together, we explored the lush landscapes of Suriname, carefully observing and documenting the life cycles of insects.
Their curiosity and artistic talents complemented my scientific pursuits, creating a collaborative and enriching family endeavor. In an era when women faced challenges in the scientific community, we defied societal norms, leaving a lasting legacy in the fields of entomology and illustration.
Through our collective efforts, we not only expanded the understanding of insect transformations but also paved the way for future generations of women in science and art.
